Sfakia

The county of Sfakia is one of the most mountainous in Crete and one of the most heroic, beautiful and interesting.
Sfakia remain the most wild and unspoiled landscape in all Crete.
Hora Sfakion, the seaside capital of the county, is a coastal village located on the South western coast of Crete, 70 km from the city of Chania, Crete. Hora Sfakion is an ideal base for mountainous and sea excursions to the villages and sandy beaches of southern Crete. Besides the wonderful plateau of Askifou village and gorge of Imbros there are plenty of beaches accessible from Sfakia.
In its enclosed harbour, the small boats dock in the summer, bringing the hikers from the Samaria Gorge. Visitors can enjoy the quiet and calm of the village, the traditional homes, on the seaside cafes and taverns. Regular public transportation from Chania is available for visiting Hora Sfakion.

The village of Sfakia is both quiet - busy with individual or independent tourists in the summer - in its role as home and fishing village to local people, and a port for those travelling by ferry to Agia Roumeli, Sougia, Paleochora and the unspoilt island of Gavdos (see ferry schedules below). You could also approach the area from Plakias and the east on roads which are slow-going but pass through wonderful, distinctive Cretan scenery.
In antiquity a major exporter of meat to Athens, Sfakia is now a notorious region with much history and the quieter form of tourism. It's wonderful, rugged White Mountains offer significant hiking opportunities ranging from difficult to hard-walking.
